Hound boys overwhelm Jefferson

The Spoofhound boys basketball team proved far too explosive and balanced offensively for Jefferson to handle.

Maryville exceeded 60 points for the second straight game and placed five in double-figures to earn a 68-40 win over Jefferson Thursday night at MHS Gymnasium.

Never really slowed at the offensive end, the Hounds scored 14 or more points in all four quarters and won all four by at least five points.

Their largest lead was their final one of 28 points.

Maryville improved to 7-1 and extended its winning streak to six games. Jefferson fell to 4-4 after beating Mound City Tuesday night.

Maryville's five double-figure scorers were senior Jonathan Baker (15 points), junior Trent Nally (14 points), senior Kyle Leslie (11 points), senior Tyler Kenkel (10 points) and junior Ty Hilsabeck (10 points).

Senior point guard Treyton Burch added six.

Jefferson's Zach Jermain popped three, 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Kyler Farnan also hit double-figures with 10. Blake Meyer added nine points, hitting on a pair of first half three's.

After a three by Meyer to open the game, Maryville scored the next seven points and played from in front the rest of the way.

The Hounds finished the opening quarter up 17-12 and scored on their first three second quarter trips to lead by 11.

Jefferson got a floater from Jermain and a second Meyer three to make it 23-17, forcing a Maryville timeout.

Baker took charge right after, scoring the next five points and a follow by Hilsabeck made it 30-17.

The Hounds went to the half up 36-23.

Maryville began the third quarter with six straight points to grow the lead to 42-23.

It reached as many as 22 in the quarter on a basket by Hilsabeck.

A three-pointer by Jermain created a 50-31 score heading to the fourth.

Up 20 in the fourth, the Hounds scored the final eight points.

The night was a punctuated by a one-handed slam from Leslie in the final minute.

Maryville takes on undefeated Lafayette in its MEC opener Tuesday night in St. Joseph. Jefferson plays Worth County and Stanberry next week.
