Trojan offense shines in 68-43 win

BURLINGTON JUNCTION—Nodaway-Holt's boys basketball team showcased the ability to be both balanced and explosive at the offensive end Monday night.

The Trojans scored 16 or more points in all four quarters and got contributions from 10 of the 12 players that appeared in a 68-43 win over North Nodaway at the Northwest Missouri Tournament.

Feeding off over 20 Mustang turnovers, Nodaway-Holt (4-2) put up 36 first half points and finished with its second highest total of the season, one game removed from being held to 38 points by Rock Port.

"I thought defensively we played pretty well and it created some offensive chances for us," said Nodaway-Holt head coach Terry Petersen. "Overall, we shot pretty well. We still had 20 turnovers and North Nodaway did some nice things in their 2-2-1 zone. We got to do a better job of handling the ball."

The Trojans (4-2) led the entire way after breaking open a 6-6 tie in the first quarter with 12 straight points.

North Nodaway went the final 5:02 of the first quarter and the first 1:33 of the second quarter without a basket.

A layup by senior Stephen Schneidermeyer put the Trojans ahead 20-10 and their lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way.

The Trojans scored eight straight points to go up 30-12 and a three by Jackson Beattie gave them their largest first half lead of 19 points at 33-14.

Two free throws by Schniedermeyer with six seconds left in the quarter raised Nodaway-Holt's halftime lead to 36-18.

Nick Patterson hit his only three in the third quarter to put the Trojans up 50-24. The quarter ended with the Trojans ahead 52-30.

In the fourth quarter, Nodaway-Holt briefly grew its lead to 30 points just after removing its starters.

Beattie finished as Nodaway-Holt's leading scorer with 16 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. He was 7-9 from the field with a three-pointer.

"He's starting to find his spot," said Petersen. "He learned this summer he's not a guard. We wanted to see because that's what he played in junior high, but he continues to get bigger. He was a horse on the boards. He's doing a nice job for us down low and he can step out and hit that shot. He's starting to find his groove a little bit and that's pretty encouraging with him being just a sophomore."

Patterson, a senior, turned it on in the second half to finish with 14 points. It was his sixth consecutive game of the year scoring between 13 and 16 points.

Schniedermeyer totaled eight points. Junior Brice Shamberger, senior Derek Lemon and junior Devin Albertson each had six.

Senior Trent Coleman had a big game for North Nodaway with 16 points. Nick Gladman knocked down a pair of three's to finish with 12 points. Austin Reynolds also reached double-figures late with 11 points.

The Trojans get Northeast Nodaway in their next game Wednesday night at 6 p.m. North Nodaway also plays Northeast Nodaway tonight at 9 p.m.

Girls

Nodaway-Holt revved up its offense in the second quarter and pulled far away from Craig-Fairfax for a 64-36 win Monday night in the Northwest Missouri Tournament.

The Trojans scored 55 of their 64 points in the last three quarters, including 23 in the fourth.

They outscored Craig 17-2 in the second quarter to take a 26-8 lead to the half.

Held scoreless in the first quarter, Nodaway-Holt's Megan Rosenbohm went for 27 over the final three. Krysta Beattie finished with 10 points.

Darcie Gallagher added nine and hit a pair of first half three's.
