Now for my fellow geek friends and “extended family” out there, this is probably old news but I wanted to talk about it nonetheless.
The reason why I waited so long was that I wanted to wait for the hub-bub to die down and see what lingered.
And what is lingering is the promise of Star Wars Episodes 7-9 coming in the future.
Let’s back up a bit though and wrap our head around what has led up to these shocking events.
We all knew, or some of us did, that George Lucas had been talking about retiring for a while now.
Some in the Star Wars universe of fandom would say that it is about time that he did.
What wasn’t expected, or at least by me, was this colossal deal that sent LucasFilm to Walt Disney Studios for a cash and stock deal equalling up to 4.05 billion dollars. WOW!
So why Disney and why not Fox who has held the distribution rights for the Star Wars films?
To be honest, I don’t know but I am do know this, I am excited.
Tack on the fact that Disney owns Pixar, Marvel Studios AND now LucasFilm, you could only imagine that the house that the Mouse built will only get stronger.
So what does this mean for us Star Wars fans out there?
Well, like I stated before, there will be a new Star Wars film as soon as 2015.
Also, it means that a new filmmaker will take over the saga from Lucas and start to reshape the universe with their new ideas and direction.
Oh, Lucas will still be along as a creative consultant, so his vision will still be incorporated into the new filmmakers.
So do I like the fact that Disney now owns the property that I have long loved?
For me, it is a big resounding yes.
Because it is Disney and not some other studio, I don’t believe that Star Wars will become a glut on society.
I don’t think there will be this rush to put out a new Star Wars cash cow every year.
With Disney, they can take their time and really put a lot into the development of the new series and make it what the fans want.
Plus with Marvel and Pixar still making a ton of money, Star Wars doesn’t have to carry the studio, just enhance it.
What I do believe is a bit strange is that most people have swept the fact that Disney now owns the rights to Indiana Jones under the rug.
Maybe it has to do with the past film (nuke the fridge anyone), but this isn’t a fact that should be overlooked.
I would love to see Disney take this property and breathe new life in to it as well, ala Young Indiana Jones style.
All I know is this, Star Wars now has a solid future in the film world and I think Disney will do the series proud.
Also, I look forward to getting out to the theme parks as soon as possible. You just know that more Star Wars themed rides are going to start popping up all over the park.
JOY!
Now if they could just get a quality MMORPG developed...
