North Andrew girls take PVC Tournament title from Jefferson

Jefferson has a lot of catching up to do in order to remain on top of the Platte Valley Conference this year.

The two-time defending regular season champions were beaten soundly by rising power North Andrew in the PVC Tournament Girls Championship game 51-29 Friday at Bearcat Arena.

Coached by former Northwest women's assistant Chuck Fox, North Andrew scored the game's first 10 points and never relented control, holding at least a 13-point lead throughout the second half.

This was Jefferson's first loss to a PVC opponent since falling to Northeast Nodaway during the 2009-2010 season.

"North Andrew is a quality team," said Jefferson head girls coach Tyler Pedersen. "I knew that coming into the season. The past couple of years they've had some really good players and they've added to it with some underclassmen. They had three or four freshmen out there. They have a lot of talent."

In a start that resembled last year's sectional game against Mercer at Bearcat Arena, Jefferson needed a buzzer-beating jumper from Danae Schieber to avoid being shutout in the first quarter.

This time, the Eagles never recovered.

North Andrew scored the first eight points of the second quarter, building its lead to 18-2.

A bank shot by Shanna Welch sent the Eagles into the half trailing 21-8.

The Cardinals put their foot on the throttle in the third quarter, turning a slew of Jefferson turnovers into quick points to stretch their lead to 39-16.

At that point, Jefferson's fate was pretty much sealed.

"We're not in shape and we weren't playing strong," said Pedersen. "North Andrew was playing a lot stronger than us. I kept that positive attitude thinking it would turn around. That's a big court they're playing on. When you're gassed in the first three minutes of the game, it's probably not going to get any better."

North Andrew's Danielle Chambers led all scorers with 16 points. Brinsley Oliver posted 13 points. Six others chipped in between two and six points.

Welch led Jefferson with 10 points. Schieber tossed in seven. Jill Henry had six and Brooklyn Stoll tallied five points.

Jefferson's next game is Tuesday against LeBlond. They play North Andrew again Jan. 15 in Conception Junction.

DeKalb 39 Northeast Nodaway 24 (3rd Place Game)

Held to seven first half points and none in the first quarter, Northeast Nodaway picked up its offense in the second half, but not enough to catch DeKalb in a 39-24 loss Friday at Bearcat Arena.

Alyssa Jones led all scorers with 13 points. Madison Reagan followed with 10.

Taryn Farnan paced Northeast Nodaway with 11 points. Holly Redden added seven with a 3-pointer.

South Nodaway 32 Osborn 20 (Consolation Game)

Playing tenacious defense over four quarters, the Longhorns secured a 32-20 win over Osborn Thursday in the girls consolation game.

South Nodaway held Osborn to seven points or fewer in all four quarters, with a game-low of two in the fourth.

Andrea Henggeler and LeAnn Walker were the game's high scorers with nine points.
