Lady Mustangs club second straight opponent

Early in the season, the North Nodaway girls basketball team is showing the potential to be a dominant force in the area.

The Lady Mustangs clubbed South Nodaway 49-12 Tuesday in Barnard, giving them two wins in their first two games by a combined score of 116-20.

North Nodaway (2-0) beat Union Star 67-8 in its season opener Monday. The Mustangs outscored South Nodaway by 10 or more points in the first three quarters and took a 45-9 lead to the fourth.

Junior guard Cambry Schluter scored a game-high 20 points and hit three, 3-pointers. Leslie Birkenholz added eight points and Alysa Lyle finished with six.

Eight different Mustangs provided scoring contributions.

Alliison Hilsabeck and Mal. Hilsabeck shared the scoring lead for South Nodaway with four points.

Jefferson 60 South Harrison 46

Fourth place finishers in Class 1 each of the last two years, the Lady Eagles overcame a six-point deficit at the end of one quarter to win its season opener over Class 2 South Harrison 60-46 Tuesday night in Bethany.

Held to six first quarter points, the Eagles got their offense cranked up in the second quarter and combined for 54 points over the final three, including 37 in the second half. The Eagles surged ahead in the third quarter and added to their lead in the fourth.

Six Jefferson players contributed six or more points led by Ashley Chor with 17.

Sarah Kemper also was in double-figures with 11 points.

Both players hit three, 3-pointers in the game.

Shanna Welch finished with nine points. Brooklyn Stoll and Kristina Bliley added seven apiece.

Boys

Tied with Class 2 South Harrison through three quarters, Jefferson's bid for an opening night win fell through in the fourth quarter of a 55-45 loss Tuesday night in Bethany.

The Bulldogs (1-0) put Jefferson away with clutch free throwing shooting down the stretch. They finished 15-18 on the night.

All but nine of the team's points were scored by the duo of Kaid Hendren and Dylan Heitz.

Hendren hit both of the team's three-pointers and finished with a game-high 27 points. Heitz also had a big night with 19 points.

Jefferson scored nearly half of its points from the three-point line, connecting on seven in the game.

Zach Jermain made three and led the Eagles with 18 points. Blake Meyer canned two more from long range as part of a 13 point night.

Jefferson trailed by six at the end of one quarter, but rallied to take a two-point lead at the half.

The Bulldogs got it tied by the end of the third quarter before surging ahead in the fourth.

South Nodaway 58 North Nodaway 37

South Nodaway's three returning starters from last year all scored in double-figures to lead the Longhorns past North Nodaway 58-37 Tuesday night.

All-conference guard Dakota Murphy poured in a game-high 20 points. Mitch Hilsabeck netted 14 points, Silas Nielson had 12 and Damien Wilmore added eight.

The Longhorns led by three at the end of one quarter and grew it in each of the final three.

South Nodaway (1-0) pulled away in the fourth, outscoring North Nodaway 21-9.

The Mustangs (0-2) were led by Trent Coleman with 16 points.

Koby Reynolds finished with nine points.
