Mound City extinguishes Nodaway-Holt

Dominant over most of the final three quarters, second-seeded Mound City pulled away from third-seeded Nodaway-Holt for a 58-14 win Friday in the District 2 semifinals.

After the Trojans pulled into a 6-6 tie early in the second quarter, the Panthers outscored them 52-8 the rest of the way.

Nodaway Holt's lone remaining touchdown came in the third quarter and followed three straight by the Panthers that stretched their lead to 30-6.

The 44-point final margin doubled Mound City's 70-48 win over the Trojans in the regular season.

The Panthers (7-3) advanced to play top-seeded Stanberry in the district finals Friday. Nodaway-Holt's first season under head coach Josh Petersen ended at 5-5— a five-win improvement over the year prior.

Mound City back Thomas Shiflett had five rushing touchdowns and accumulated 104 yards on 16 carries.

He scored from four yards out in the second quarter, seven yards out in the third and then had three scoring runs in the fourth quarter of 4, 2 and 28 yards.

Quarterback Luke Sanders threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The first went to Brett Johnson from 27 yards out. He later hit Dayne Messer for a 30-yard score.

Nodaway-Holt's passing attack sputtered most of the night, with quarterback Nick Patterson completing only 9-29 passes for 128 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Trojans tied the game at 6 on a 7-yard run by Wade Saxton. Their only other touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Patterson.

Saxton was the Trojans leader rusher with 51 yards on 11 carries. Jackson Beattie caught four passes for 47 yards.

Worth County 52 Tarkio 12

The Tigers seized control with a 30-point first quarter and went on to score 52 unanswered in a 52-12 rout of Tarkio in the District 1 semifinals Friday in Grant City.

Worth County (9-1) advanced to play Rock Port in the District 1 finals Friday. Tarko finished at 4-6.

Tiger back Dallas Greenland and wideout Aaron Patton combined to score Worth County's first six touchdowns.

Greenland had four of them on runs of 1, 21, 10 and 13 yards. He finished with 115 yards on 16 carries. Patton had touchdown receptions of 15 and 22 yards from quarterback Bryce Ross in the first quarter.

All four of Ross' completions went to Patton for 67 yards.

Brevyn Ross made it 52-0 with a 12-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Tarkio's Max Graves followed with a 58-yard kickoff return touchdown and a 4-yard touchdown run.

Rock Port 70 North Nodaway 0

The Blue Jays ambushed North Nodaway with a 56-point first quarter and tacked on two second quarter scores to win 70-0 in a District 1 semifinal game that lasted two quarters.

Rock Port's Eric Duncan scored three touchdowns on a fumble return, a 55-yard kickoff return and 17-yard run. Jayden McMahon had a pair of 5-yard scoring runs in the first quarter.

Chandler Farmer returned a kick-off 57 yards for a touchdown and added 7-yard touchdown run.

Rock Port didn't attempt a pass in the game, and North Nodaway quarterback Koby Reynolds mis-fired on all seven of his attempts.

North Nodaway's Tucker Null rushed four times for 22 yards.

The Mustangs finished at 4-6, their highest win total since 2007. Rock Port (9-1) plays Worth County in the district title game Friday.

Stanberry 77 South Nodaway 14

The Bulldogs got off to a blistering start with seven straight touchdowns and only let up slightly in a 77-14 win over South Nodaway in the District 2 semifinals Friday.

Stanberry scored 55 first half points and limited the Longhorn offense to single scores in the second and fourth quarters, building as much as a 71-point lead.

Stanberry running backs Jesse Oldham rushed for game-high 156 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. Backfield mate Nathan Luke ran for 114 yards on only six carries with two rushing touchdowns, a 15-yard receiving touchdown and a 10-yard fumble return touchdown.

Ike Heddinger also returned a fumble 10 yards for a score.

Reid Osborn threw a touchdown pass and ran five yards for a score. Spencer Osborn and Ryan Jensen each had touchdown receptions.

Brian Noble tacked on a pair of fourth quarter rushing scores.

South Nodaway got on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Lemaster to Dakota Murphy. In the fourth quarter, LeMaster connected with Blake Meyer on a 65-yard score.

Murphy hauled in five passes for 111 yards in the losing cause.

The Longhorns finished at 3-7 for the third consecutive year. Stanberry (9-1) plays Mound City in the district title game Friday night.
