  • As the holiday season approaches, local organizations are gearing up for various charity efforts designed to help the less fortunate.
Today's Civic Women is no exception. The group has organized Maryville's Toys for Tots effort for almost 30 years and will do so again in 2012.
A national non-profit organization, Toys for Tots' stated goal is to ensure that all children have a gift under the tree on Christmas morning.
The annual drive is one of TCW's main projects. Last year, toys were provided to 226 area children.
Any size donation is accepted, and each child receives roughly $35 worth of toys along with at least one book.
Individuals and organizations can help out through monetary donations, the purchase of new toys and fundraisers.
Toys for Tots barrels can be found at the following locations: Walgreens, Watkins True Value Hardware, St. Gregory's School (second grade), Walmart, Nodaway Valley Bank (south branch), Beverly Health Care, Bank Midwest, Casey's (east location), US Bank, Maryville Public Library, Nodaway County Senior Center, Movie Magic, Maryville Daily Forum, Dollar General (both locations) and Citizens Bank & Trust.
Donations will be accepted through Dec. 1. Toys are to be sorted and distributed Dec. 10. All gifts are tax-deductible.
Those unable to make it to a bin location can mail toys or a check to Toys for Tots, P.O. Box 104, Maryville, MO, 64468.
Families who would like to be considered as recipients should call Dave Weichinger, Community Services Inc., at (660) 582-3113. Only approved applicants will receive toys.
