Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder will be in Maryville today to present local resident Dorothy Schafer with the Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award in recognition of "tireless volunteerism."
Kinder was to make the presentation at 11:30 a.m. in the dining room of the Nodaway County Senior Center, located at 1210 E. First St.
Schafer was one of 34 Senior Service Award winners named earlier this year. She was nominated by Senior Center Administrator Amie Firavich.
Schafer has been a longtime volunteer at the center as well as for St. Gregory’s School and St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church.
For more than 15 years, she has provided kitchen help and meal deliveries for the center and also assists in preparing and serving funeral and guild dinners at the church, where she is a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound and nursing home residents.
"Dorothy’s selfless caring about the welfare of others is her most outstanding trait as a volunteer," Firavich said in her nomination. "She is an excellent role model for community service."
Kinder this year expanded the Senior Service Award, naming 34 winners, one in each of the state’s 34 Senatorial Districts.
