  • The work of ceramicist Janice Jakielski will be featured in an upcoming exhibit at the DeLuce Gallery at Northwest Missouri State University.
Artwork by Jakielski will be on display Nov. 5-Dec. 10, and a lecture and reception featuring the artist will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 in Charles Johnson Theater. Both the gallery and the auditorium are located on the first floor of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building across the street from Bearcat Arena.
Jakielski holds a bachelor's of fine arts from the New York State College of Ceramic Art and Design at Alfred University and earned her MFA at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
She has taught at several institutions, including Colorado State University-Fort Collins and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This fall she will join the faculty of the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Jakielski has served as an artist-in-resident both in the United States and abroad. Recent exhibitions include the Seattle (Wash.) Design Center and the Textile Arts Center, Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as shows in California and Montana.
"My most recent explorations have a focus on communication and relationships," the artist said. "Through these objects I am exploring methods of communication and the navigation of the spaces, both physical and mental, that we inhabit. By disrupting or enhancing the senses, my props make possible an exaggerated self-awareness, a break in the normalcy of daily experience."
