  • Leonard Leo Schafer was born July 23, 1950 at Maryville, Missouri to Henry Anthony and Margaret Mary (Jaeger) Schafer. He graduated Maryville High School and attended college after serving in the United States Navy for four years.
    He married Carole Zapf August 22, 1975 at Graham, Missouri. The couple had two children: Derrick and Angela. Leonard worked at Heinold Hog Market following his time in the service. He then farmed east of Maitland until the couple bought a farm in Iowa in 1984 south of New Market, Iowa.
    Leonard worked at the Clarinda Correctional Facility, first in the original building and then moving to the new prison in the 90’s. After 24 years working there he retired from the correction facility.
    Leonard spent his free time taking care of the farm, including his cows and horses, and especially enjoyed the grandkids.
    Leonard passed away unexpectedly October 13, 2012 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Derrick in 2007; brothers Herman, Bob, Earn, Jim and John Schafer; and brother-in-law John Mullinax.
    Surviving Leonard is his wife Carole of New Market, IA; daughter Angela Schafer-Rauch and husband Conway Rauch and their children Colten Adam Schafer and Cheyenne Lynn Rauch, all of Burlington Junction, Missouri; siblings, Martin Schafer and wife Marilyn of Barnard, MO, Bill Schafer and wife Dorothy of Maryville, MO, Annie Johnson and husband Duane of Omaha, NE, Dorothy Mullinax of Grapevine, TX, Mary Margaret Hernandez and husband Don of St. Joseph, MO, sisters-in-law Kathleen Schafer, Skidmore, MO, Edna Schafer, Maryville, MO, and Karen Schafer, Holt, MO; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda with Rev. Russ Clark officiating. Military Honors provided by Clarinda American Legion Sergy Post #98. Family visitation will be 5-7 pm Tuesday at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund to be established.
