Bearcats win home event by 16 strokes

On a bitterly cold Friday morning that produced small snowflakes, Northwest Missouri State's golf team fought through the conditions well enough to shoot six strokes better than the day before and win the Bearcat Fall Classic by 16 strokes at Mozingo Lake Golf Course.

Competing for the final time this fall, the Bearcats claimed their third tournament title in five tries to go along with an earlier second place finish.

They did so by shooting a 325 in the second round following a 331 in round one to finish at 656.

Northwest entered the final round with a nine-stroke lead.

Missouri Western was second with a 372. William Jewell (695), Ottawa (740) and Central Missouri (753) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Steph Charteris started Friday in third place, but came back to win the tournament with a second-round score of 73 for a two-day total of 154.

Northwest grabbed second place as well with Cassie Lowell firing a two-day score of 161. She followed a round one 78 with an 83 in the second round.

Sophomore Ashley Powers finished tied for fifth place (167), while senior Tess Edwards tied for seventh place (171).

Junior Kristina D'Angela and freshman Amber Norman both shot 173 and finished tied for 10th place.
