Bearcats beat Emporia St., Washburn 1-0

A team that's shown a penchant for winning close matches all year, Northwest Missouri State came through in those situations twice more over the weekend.

The Bearcats scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation to pull out 1-0 wins over Emporia State on the road Friday and Washburn Sunday at Bearcat Pitch.

Northwest freshman Anna Holden netted the deciding goal against Washburn with 1:35 left in the match. It was her second of the season and came on an assist from Fiona Moloney.

The win improved Northwest to 7-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 in the MIAA and 5-1-2 in matches decided by one goal or less.

Northwest is now tied for second in the conference with Central Missouri. Both teams have 16 points.

The Bearcats posted their third shutout in the last four matches against Washburn and have given up just a single goal during that span.

Goalkeeper Kelsey Adams made five saves in the match and now owns three shutouts on the season.

The two teams combined for 13 first half shot attempts, but none resulted in goals.

The second half featured two yellow cards and a red, all against Washburn.

The Bearcats will be on the road for both matches this week, beginning with Nebraska-Kearney Thursday at 7 p.m.

Friday's Results

Late-match offensive heroics from sophomore Taylor Sellars allowed Northwest Missouri State to grab a 1-0 road win over Emporia State Friday.

Sellars scored the game-winning goal unassisted on a long range boot in the 80th minute, breaking a scoreless tie.

Shaylynn Durham made her first start of the year in net and posted a shutout while stopping four shots. Emporia's keeper Melanie Nuessen also made four saves.

Both teams got off 10 shots in the match. Northwest also took nine corners to just five for Emporia.
