• Veasey, Schreck advance to sectionals

  • Maryville's senior doubles tandem of Mara Veasey and Emily Schreck secured another sectional berth with a second place finish at the Class 1 District 16 Individual Tournament Thursday in Chillicothe.
    Bidding for their first district title, Veasey and Schreck lost in the doubles final to Trenton's Jaci Tracey and Jessica Tracey 4-6, 4-6.
    It was just their second loss all season.
    Veasey and Schreck won their opening match over Chillicothe's Jozie Reeder and Chelsea Long 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals, they took out Savannah's Cece Bolin and Shayna Rosenak 6-2, 6-3.
    The win guaranteed them a spot at sectionals.
    Qualifying as the No. 2 seed out of the district, Veasey and Schreck will take on the No. 1 seed out of District 15 in sectionals next week.
    Maryville's other four players were unable to make it out of districts.
    The doubles team of Dalane Goodall and Shannon Johnson lost a hard-fought first round match to Chillicothe's Steffany Gramenz and Kelly Westphal 6-6 (8-10), 2-6.
    In singles action, Abi Shipley won her first round match over Cameron's Gena Sloan 6-6 (10-8). She was eliminated a match later with a 4-6, 1-6 loss to Savannah's Molly Koch.
    Samantha Auffert lost her first round singles match to Sloan 0-6, 2-6.
