ST. JOSEPH- With only one loss all season, Maryville seniors Mara Veasey and Emily Schreck have proven to be the MEC's most formidable doubles team.
Veasey and Schreck re-affirmed that status Wednesday by winning the MEC doubles title with three straight-set victories in a row at Noyes Courts.
In the championship match, Veasey and Schreck defeated Savannah's No. 1 team of Erin Hirter and Morgan Case 6-1, 6-4.
Their path to the finals began with a 6-1, 6-0 romp of Cece Bolin/Atkins from Savannah in the quarterfinals.
That was followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chillicothe's Jozie Reeter and Chelsea Long in the semifinals.
Veasey and Schreck both made first-team All-MEC, and comprised two of Maryville's four medalists on the day.
Maryville's No. 2 doubles team of Shannon Johnson and Dalane Goodall claimed their first MEC medals with a fifth place finish, going 4-1 in the tournament.
They defeated Benton's team of Aubrey Silvey and Hayley Spence in the fifth place match 8-6.
Johnson/Goodall started off with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lafayette's Kori Trautloff and Elora Gates. In their next match, they lost to Hirter/Case from Savannah 4-6, 1-6.
Johnson/Goodall rebounded with an 8-6 win over Benton's Nicole Bonham and Jaycen Wilson 8-6. Their third win came against Cameron's Marcie Webber/Whitney Parks 8-3.
Also competing for the Hounds were singles players Abi Shipley and Samantha Auffert.
Both won their first round matches and finished 1-2.
Shipley's lone win came against Devon Clark of Lafayette 6-4, 6-2. She lost to Syndie Whiteside from Chillicothe 0-6, 0-6 and Lindsay Williams from Benton 4-8.
Auffert beat Savannah Sanai from LeBlond 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in her opening round match before losing to Benton's Cami Pendleton 0-6, 0-6 and Ashlynn Shroyer from Lafayette 2-8.
"Everyone played well," said Maryville head coach Nicole McGinness-Miller. "I was really proud of all the girls winning their first round in the tournament."
