  • Judy Lawyer, a retired teacher from the Maryville R-II School District, was recognized as the Region I Distinguished Retiree of the Year during the 2012 Missouri Retired Teachers Association meeting Sept. 11-12 in Jefferson City.
    In addition, several "Units of Excellence" were recognized, including the  Nodaway County Retired School Employees (NCARSE) chapter.
    Marlin Kinman and Sue Schenkel attended the meeting as NCARSE representatives.
    Other highlights included a mortgage-burning ceremony for a new MRTA office facility built in 2009. Payment was made through donations from members and sponsors.
    Further proceeds will help support the Building for the Future endowment for classroom grants and in-service education scholarships.
    Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan delivered the keynote address at the annual awards luncheon.
    NCARSE will host the Region I MRTA meeting on Oct. 15 at the First Christian Church in Maryville. Those wishing to attend should make reservation with Nina Schneider by Oct. 4.
