Ryan Heiland of Des Moines, Iowa, has been hired by the city of Maryville to fill the long-vacant post of assistant city manager, Human Resources Manager Amy Strough announced Tuesday.
Strough said Heiland was selected by City Manager Greg McDanel from among 77 applicants for the post, which had been unfilled since 2007. He is to begin his new duties Aug. 6.
Since early 2011, Heiland has worked as a project manager for Barnett Construction & Development. Earlier in his career he served as a planner for the municipalities of Clive and Ames, both in Iowa, and the Arizona cities of Mesa and Phoenix.
A native of Adel, Iowa, Heiland graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in geography. He also completed extensive coursework in economic development and earned a master's degree in public administration from Drake University in 2009. Other qualifications include standing as a nationally certified planner.
Though he grew up in Iowa, Strough said Heiland has significant ties to Maryville through Northwest, where his parents, two sisters and other family members attended college.
